The Trick to Beating Bad Habits

We’ve had hundreds of conversations with members over the years.

And one thing we’ve noticed: Most people don’t actually know how to change their habits.

They try to cut things out… to stop doing the “bad stuff”… but willpower runs out fast when it’s not backed by a plan.

Here’s what we’ve found works best:

The best way to remove a bad habit is to replace it with a good one.

Take this common example: You finish dinner and relax on the couch. You feel good… and then the idea of dessert pops up. A little turns into a lot, and suddenly you’re in a cycle you didn’t intend.

Instead of trying to white-knuckle your way out of dessert, what if you just shifted the pattern?

Try this: As soon as dinner ends, go for a 15–20 minute walk. Nothing complicated. Just move your body and break the routine.

When you come back inside, there’s a good chance you’ll feel better, clearer, and less likely to reach for dessert—or at least more in control of how much.

We didn’t tell you to skip dessert. We just helped you change the situation that made it feel necessary.

That’s the power of a replacement behavior: It’s not about restriction. It’s about redirection.

Find the trigger. Insert a new behavior. Let the old habit fade on its own.
