A new member walked up to me and said she needed to talk. My mind raced through everything that could’ve gone wrong. I braced for an issue and asked what she wanted to discuss.
She smiled. She’s been in for 3 sessions and wants to sign up for the year.
Now I really wanted to ask questions—why is she enjoying it so much?
She shared that she’s in her mid-60s and has never gone to a gym, though she’s been active most of her life. Lately she’s noticed some activities getting harder and aches creeping in. Her doctor recommended she start strength training—and specifically mentioned us as the ideal place. She admitted she felt a little embarrassed being brand-new to the gym world, but said it’s been seamless because our trainers communicate so well and meet her where she is.
I give her a lot of credit. Many people in their 60s who haven’t been to a gym feel hesitant—or uninterested—about trying one. She heard good things, took the hardest step by booking an assessment, and now she is happy that she did.
Our goal for her is simple: five years from now she is entering her 70’s feeling better than she has in decades. Stronger, more confident, fewer aches, and able to do what she loves—playing with the grandkids, skiing, hiking, carrying groceries, traveling—without thinking twice.
